History

The Public Affairs Directorate of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria started in 1975, as a small unit under the Registry called Information Office. A few intermediary and junior staff were then redeployed to help run the office with Alhaji Musa Abubakar, a Deputy Registrar, as head. The basic functions of the unit then were mainly to publish and distribute bulletins and information pamphlets for the University within the two campuses at Samaru and Kongo.

The office saw major changes in its structure and functions when Jonathan Kadiri Manzo held sway as head of the unit during the tenure of Professor Nayaya Mohammed as Vice Chancellor of the University between 1986 and 1989. It was during his time the office was changed to Information and Protocol Unit following his recommendations to the Vice Chancellor on the need for that. Manzo left in 1990 and Barrister Sunday Maiyaki took over. Maiyaki worked for some years before Barrister Barka Mshelia stepped in as head of the unit in an acting capacity for one year. Barka handed over the mantle of leadership to Bright Igbako, who held sway for about two years. Equally, Malam Sani Katsina was at one time head of the unit before Malam Lawal Sambo, who died before the end of his tenure. The unit was upgraded to a fully-fledged department under the headship of Mr. Bitrus Galmaka who assumed office in 2006. Various units were created out of the department to handle critical and key functions such as protocol, public relations, immigrations, ceremonies and publications. There was a change of leadership of the department in 2013 with the appointment of Dr Isma’ila Shehu to replace Galmaka who was redeployed to ABU FM Radio Station as its administrative secretary. Dr Shehu, a veteran broadcast journalist and an academic, brought a lot of innovations that transformed the department in a very short period. Among the key achievements made by Dr Shehu was the upgrading of the department to a directorate under the Vice Chancellor’s Office.
